Right before you start your lesson you will be donned with a beret and a painted on moustache that would make Picasso himself proud, be prepared to giggle your head off while you play some naughty drawing games and you can even take the art you’ve created home- although it might not be something you want to put on top of your fireplace next to a framed picture of Grandma! You’re more than welcome to bring your own booze and have a tipple while you let your creativity flow, or if you want to host the event at a pub obviously a private room is required!, nothing seems more appropriate than having a nice cocktail during the session.
Good to know
No previous experience or skill is required for these lessons, so it doesn’t matter if you’re the next Van Gogh or if you just scribble on the paper and call it ‘’abstract’’- everyone is welcome here! Classes have been held from Hotel rooms to pubs so there should be no stress when looking for a place to book!
When you’re looking for somewhere to book for the bride or groom, we know it can be difficult to find an event that is more low-key and chilled compared to the typical boozy evening. Sometimes you don’t want shots poured down your throat at 4am with music blasting so loud it makes your ears ring the next day, sometimes you just want to have a relaxing evening painting away your stress with the people you hold nearest and dearest and with that in mind, ceramics cafe, Creative Biscuit has you covered.
What they do
With over a decade's worth of experience, owners Tim Smith and Karen Dunn know the beauty in picking up a paintbrush and creating something beautiful and with that in mind Creative Biscuit was born. Pick any ceramic that catches your eye and let your inner artist flow by painting a beautiful piece that you can keep forever. From cups to vases and plates, you will not be at a loss of what to paint when you enter their beautiful cafe in South Woodford. You and the rest of your party can even paint a cup each from their beautiful tea set for the bride or groom to bring home as a memento of their special day!
A bride or a groom who is looking for a more relaxed event.
It is four pounds to enter the studio, between £4-£20 depending on what ceramics you pick to paint and £12-£16 to add a delicious afternoon tea made by Tim himself - what a bargain! (the price difference is whether you want sandwiches AND cakes or just the former)
If you’re feeling like having a cheeky glass of wine while painting, you are more than welcome to bring your own booze, the cafe even provides the glasses for you! All ages are allowed, so everyone from the kids to Granny and Grandad can get in on the fun :)
Good to know
Is there a certain ceramic you would love to paint but you’re worried Tim and Karen don’t have it? No worries! Let them know in advance and they will get those in for you no problem. They even do other types of crafting in their sessions such as needle punching, weaving and printing! It’s good to keep in mind that Karen and Tim don’t take deposits either so that’s even less stress for everyone!
Abinger Cookery School
Sometimes a bride or groom just wants a day of relaxation, great company and even greater food. Who needs nightclubs and sugary over expensive cocktails when you can sit down with your loved ones and tuck into a delicious meal that you actually made?! With Abinger Cookery School you’ll be in great hands as you pop on your apron and whisk, bake and sautee your troubles away!
What they do
In this beautifully refurbished pub in Dorking, set in the Surrey Hills, you and your party will be treated to an amazing experience under the guise of a cookery class! Lizzie has run the business since around 2 weeks before the first lockdown (there’s a baptism of fire if ever you’ve seen one!). What you will find today is an absolute reflection of Lizzie’s enthusiasm and commitment to every single person who crosses the Abinger threshold having an experience they will never forget!
So firstly, know that Lizzie is not a professional chef (though rumour has it she’s pretty handy at baking)…..she leaves the actual workshops to a highly skilled team of pros. So skilled are they that the Abinger is endorsed to run Weber grill courses! You would not believe what you can create on a barbecue. Like literally, ask Lizzie when you call and prepare to have your mind blown!
They run evening, half day and full day courses and the choice of skills you can learn and delicious goodies you can create is mind boggling. From skills courses like knife handling, butchery and baking, to masterclasses in Italian recipes, ‘dude food’ and British game, the options are almost endless! Alternatively you can create whole menus like Burger and Lobster, a Sushi workshop or the fantastically named Wok and Roll! Combine that with a beautiful garden area and Lizzie and her team’s commitment to tailoring every element of your experience to match everything you want, you can guarantee an awesome time.
A bride or groom who’s wanting an immersive and interactive experience for the whole group while learning some new skills along the way!
You can decorate both the indoor and outdoor areas to your heart's desire and when you walk in you will don a beautiful apron that you can even buy as a memento of the day! Bring your own beer or bubbles to enjoy throughout the experience and you’ll soon be channeling your inner Gordon Ramsay (hopefully with less of the swearing) whilst having a great laugh with your nearest and dearest.
A full day is 5 hours and £185 per person, an evening session is two and a half hours and £80 per person and a half day is three hours and £115 per person, you book with a 30% deposit and you pay the rest of the balance six weeks before the event. You’re also best to give owner Lizzie a call right before booking to discuss your budget and timescale.
