'Thank You' day

In the UK, June 5 is designated as Thank You Day each year. In order to honour the unsung heroes in local communities who gave their time and resources to improving people's lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, the holiday was first celebrated in 2021.

The campaign quickly gained backing from the government, with the Prime Minister pledging to throw a barbeque "thank you party" for NHS employees and Royal Voluntary Service members. Famous people including Gary Lineker, Lorraine Kelly, Michael Sheen, Dame Judi Dench, Raheem Sterling and Tom Kitchin also pledged to take part. Local neighbourhoods threw picnics, barbecues, and tartan tea parties on Thank You Day.

Are there any unsung heroes in your local community?

Is there anyone in your social group or local community who truly deserves to be acknowledged and appreciated for their work? This is a terrific question to ask yourself on Thank You Day. This can be a friend who lends a hand, a teacher who goes above and beyond for the future of their students, or a person of your community who is constantly taking care of and helping those around them.

We can sometimes become so preoccupied with the daily stresses of life that we forget to say a sincere thank you to the people who go above and beyond to help us most, so they can often go unnoticed - Thank you day is the ideal time to express your gratitude.

Why not treat them to something special?

One of the best things about group collections is that you can all pitch in to buy something extra special; why not treat them to something you know they will use or a gift you know they will really love instead of each person buying an individual box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers? When everyone pitches in, the price of the gift goes up, allowing you to indulge a little bit more.

Teachers - Teachers are always there to support our children and teach the bright new minds of the next generation! This is so crucial and a selfless career that should never go unnoticed.
Friends/family that give you a helping hand - It's possible that you have a particular friend or relative in mind who is always there for you, whether it's to assist with child care or just to listen when you need to talk. How wonderful it would be to be able to give them back on Thank you day!
