Unsure what to get Mum this Christmas? She has probably had the same perfume and worn the same sunglasses for years (at least mine has). Mums have their style, they know what they like and what they don’t. Which makes it so much harder to buy for them. The key is getting them something they wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves. You can keep it simple with a candle or a robe, or go for something they’ll treasure for a long time, like a flower subscription or an experience.

My mum always turned Christmas into such a magical time and made sure everyone’s gift were so personal and specific to the person receiving them, she always got it spot on. Which is why I felt so much pressure when I was old enough to give back.

As the older and only daughter in the family, I always felt like the burden fell on me to make sure Mum got a thoughtful present, and to make sure my brothers contributed to it too. Over the years, I think I’ve mastered it.

Good candles

Think Diptyque or Jo Malone. This is something she probably wouldn’t spend money on herself, but would really appreciate. Plus, a good candle can make the whole house smell amazing and lasts for ages.

Essential oil diffuser

If you want a more permanent alternative to a candle, get her a diffuser. She can choose different essential oils to use, which gives it a bit more versatility. Essential oils smell amazing and they can bring stress relief, better sleep and even skin care and antimicrobial support.

Personalised robe

There is nothing better than lounging around the house in your robe in the morning and evening. Get your mum a 100% cotton robe with her initials on it and she’ll never take it off.

Cashmere or leather gloves

A good pair of gloves is essential in winter. I once sewed a little heart inside the cashmere gloves I gave my mum and she loved it!

Pashmina shawl

This is a low-risk option if you want to give her clothing, as you don’t have to guess her size. It’s also something she can throw over lots of different outfits.

Big plant

If your mum has plants all over the house, that probably means she’s pretty good at looking after them so why not add to the collection? Get her something a little different, with interesting colours, shapes or leaves.

I hope my mum doesn’t see this because I’m definitely giving her one this year. A different bouquet of flowers every month, delivered straight to her door. Simple, easy and beautiful.

If your mum loves reading and has a few favourite authors, you could get her an author quote clock that displays a different quote every day. So when she wakes up, she gets a little quote for the day to start her morning.

Pure silk pillowcases

A little luxury for her hair and skin. Get her a couple so she always has a fresh one on her bed.

Luxury advent calendar

Lots of beauty, cosmetics and perfume brands do these with different products for each day. You could give it to her as an early Christmas present on 1 December, or take advantage of any end-of-season discounts later in the month.

Experiences as Christmas Presents for Mum

Experiences, and especially wellness experiences, are things mums might not spend their own money on but would absolutely love. One of the organisers we spoke to even described a shift towards experiential gifts over physical presents, partly because of the guilt around buying more stuff and creating clutter.

Spa voucher

Classic! Get her a full day at the spa,she deserves it. Massages, saunas, manicures, pedicures, beauty treatments… the whole package.

Wine tasting

Really a gift for both your parents. Or get it for your mum and a friend, it’ll be a day they’ll always remember (as long as they don’t have too much wine).

Theatre or opera vouchers

Take her to the theatre! Or the opera, a musical, a ballet - whatever she’s into.

Surprise day trip

One of the things mums love most is spending time with their kids. So plan a full day of activities and give her an envelope with the destination and a little itinerary inside.

Personalised mugs

Probably the present both my parents enjoyed the most was when I gave them each a mug with a picture of me on it that said “Favourite Daughter” (I am the only daughter). There are so many variations you can do with this one.

Recreate childhood pictures

I really want to try this one because I think it’s both the sweetest and funniest idea. Take a famous childhood photo with your siblings, cousins or other family members and recreate it as adults.

I’m sure the process of trying to recreate the photos would be half the fun too.

A custom board/card game about your family

This one requires a bit more work, but it could become such a special activity on the day. Fill it with questions, inside jokes, family trivia and ridiculous memories that only your family would understand.

You’ve organised the siblings’ gift for Mum, now get paid back
